One regular routine you do when you have a bunch of information saved in your FTM program is a back up. This is great for saving progress and recovering if something was to go wrong.
Another regular thing you should do however, is compact your file. Much like your computer needs to be defragmented, so does your FTM program files. If you start seeing a few things happen that are abnormal, compact your file by going to Tools menu in the top left, then Compact file. You will be prompted to create a backup. You should. After you file is compacted, close and restart your program. All is well with the world again. You can go back to enjoying your Adventures in Genealogy!
