It's great to be back up and running on a full basis again to welcome in the new year. After several weeks of babying my old monster of a desktop, it finally went to the pit in the sky. (or the dump). While I'm not at full power yet with all my documents and programs, I was thankful to have all my stuff backed up so that I can restore them.
One thing I wanted to talk about was the power of google searches in your ancestor's history. You may be surprised to find some information out there about you missing ancestor on other people's webpages and on those webpages of people who've married into the family. While you are out there enjoying your after-Christmas shopping and preparing for the celebrations of the upcoming evenings, don't forget to document your "future history" with your camera, your videos, and even a funny story told by a relative that you can later write down. Just about every smart phone has a voice recorder now which makes remembering those stories even easier on the next day after you heard it. Be safe out there. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and enjoy your adventures in genealogy!!

Ahhh.. Thanksgiving! It is the time of year where we all take a step back to spend time with the family, cooking home made meals with all the fixins and enjoying the season. We give thanks and say our blessings, too. I'm very thankful this year and extremely blessed!
Then it all begins.... ...the shopping, the hassles, the wrapping, the rigging of the Christmas lights, the late nights and all the decorations, the cooking, the travelling to and fro, the disappointments, the family fights, the stress of the holidays and the returns of unwanted or over sized items..... As you prepare yourself for what lies ahead, take a moment or two to remember the past. Think about maybe some of the acts of kindness that you may have been around to see or do. Remember the donation you put in the red bucket? Remember the little man who let you go in front of him in line? Remember the kind words the lady in front of you said about your well behaved child? What about the random smile of a stranger? When you are out there, running here and there, pay it forward. Even the smallest of things can mean the world to someone without you knowing it. Grab an angel from the donation tree, put those extra cents in to the kettle, volunteer more than you would normally, cook a meal for an elderly neighbor, donate a jacket or a blanket to a shelter. We are all struggling, but a small thing is a wonder to someone without. One can of food can be the difference between hunger and starvation. Happy Thanksgiving - May your holidays be blessed with Peace, Love and Happiness! (and fabulous Adventures in Genealogy, too!) More often than not in our family history research we deal with members who have passed on and are part of a legacy. Many never reveal their military history to us, so we search for more. Veterans Day is for honoring the living military members who have fought for freedom and the rights of all. Today, I honor a member of my immediate family who served honorably as his father, his grandfathers, uncles, and his great great grandfathers did before him. Take the time to honor someone special today, who lives and was a veteran in war or peace, home or abroad and enjoy your Adventures in Genealogy! In gratitude to your service, brother, I honor you in a long legacy of US Navy and other military branch veterans alike in our family history. Thank you for your service. |
