As I work my way through a very long process of becoming a certified genealogist I am enlightened to the disorganization in my mind. Being organized in your research is key to finding all the facts needed to complete the picture. I thought I would highlight some organizational tools for all of you budding family researchers out there to help with your successful tree!
1. Keep notes. It doesn't matter where you do it, or on what. If you keep notes you will be thankful later for it. There are some great digital programs out there (my favorite is Evernote) to help you stay organized in note taking. If you are familiar with Ancestry, The Barefoot Genealogist has great webinars on Livestream that will help you in note taking. 2. Keep a research journal. Same as keeping notes, it is helpful to know where you looked already. Write it all down either in a prefabricated form you can get online or in your favorite note taking program. At the very least, write it in a notebook. 3. Cite your sources. Read about citing sources correctly and then keep track of them. Much like 1 and 2 above, this is key to knowing what you already know and where you know it from. For more tips on family research, feel free to contact me and we'll do a consult! Researching is a ton of fun and a great way to connect with your past. Enjoy your Adventures in Genealogy!
